Surface Area, Volume, and Looking Ahead to Chapter 11...

Write a word problem involving surface area or volume that you think is challenging. Then solve the problem, providing only the answer in the same blog. The most challenging problem from the class with the correct answer will receive bonus.

After completing this blog, define the following terms in your notebook. You may reference pages 583-584 from your online textbook.

  2. Sorry the answer is 38080 squared meters because you have to take the surface area of the top of the hotel away from the base of the roof. (They are the same)

  3. The calculator box making company wants to figure out how much money it will take to make 10 calculator boxes. Each calculator box has a height of 5cm, width of 20cm, and the length of 10cm. It takes 3 dollars for each 5squared cm.

  4. There is a cylindrical house with a cone as the roof. There are 2 trapezoid shaped windows on each of the cylinder and the cone. The diameter of the base of the cone and cylinder is 48 m, the height of the cylinder is 52 m, and the slant height of the cone is 40 m. The height of the trapezoid windows on the cylinder is 1.5 m, one of the bases are 1.5 m, and the other base is 2.5 m. The height of the trapezoid windows on the cone is 0.5 m, one of the bases are 0.5 m, and the other base is 1.5 m. Find the surface area and the volume of the house and the surface area of the house excluding the trapezoid shaped windows that are on it.

    Answers:
    Surface Area of the House= 16277.76 m2
    Surface Area of the House without the Trapezoid Windows= 16270.76 m2

    Volume of the House= 113341.44 m2

  7. Jack made a design which has the same equilateral triangles on each side of a square prism. The base of the triangle matches perfectly with the sides of the square. What is the surface area of this prism design if the base of the triangle is 5 in. and the height is 4.5 in.?

  8. Mark had a cup that was designed in a cone shape. The cone's diameter was 6 inches and the slant height of 5 inches. First he poured a full cup of water in to the cone. Then he decided to pour it in to a Pringle's bottle (cylinder shape) which had a diameter of 12 inches and a height of 30 inches. How many cups of water will Mark have to pour into the the Pringle's bottle to make it full?

  9. There is a clock that is in a shape of a disk. The thickness (height) of the clock is 2 inches. The clock consists of a white inner circle (where the clock mechanism is housed), and a wood outer circle. The diameter of the whole entire clock 15 inches. The diameter of the small circle inside the clock is 7 inches. Find the volume of the wooden portion.

    Answer: 276.32 Inches Cubed

  14. After lunch, I went to an ice-cream store and bought a delicious chocolate cone ice-cream. The ice-cream was formed by a cone and a sphere of ice-cream sitting on the top. The cone's surface area is 4983.18 millimeter squared, with a slant height that is twice the length of the radius. The sphere of ice-cream has a diameter same as the diameter of the cone. I took one delicious bite of the first ice-cream. Somehow, I realized I have consumed exactly 5432 cubic millimeters of ice-cream, from the sphere. How much actual ice-cream is left for me to eat (excluding the cone)?
    Round to the nearest hundredth, use 4/3 ∏ r(r)(r) for the formula of the sphere’s volume.




    ANSWER= 45507.17 millimeters cubed

  15. A book company knows that they have 10 of the same book (has the same size). The side lengths are 3 in. and 4 in. while the height is 6 in.. But the book company wants the book to be longer and make the book thinner which looks more attractive. So the book company made 10 books of length sides 6 and 8 with the height of 3. What is the surface area for all the books including the normal ones and the re-made ones?



    Answer: 2,880 squared inches.
